Eggs

Handcrafted Emu Eggs (3D)
This creative process begins with beautiful emu eggs bought from a farm run by a registered emu breeder.
Inspired by the natural beauty and wildlife of my home in Western Australia, I select a theme and begin work on one of these emu eggs. I start by hand drawing my outline onto the shell, and then carefully cutting out the unique design. Then the edges of the cuts are sanded, and the egg is washed and cleaned thoroughly. After the egg has been dried and sealed, the painting begins.
The inside of the egg is painted first, starting with the background on the inner curve. From stunning sunsets to tranquil dawns, the beauty of Australia is immortalised within each of these handcrafted emu eggs. The inner scene is set and painted, bringing the theme to life. Next, I paint the outside of the egg, taking care to preserve some of the rich natural colour of the emu egg.
The finishing touches may feature dot art, gold braid or other fixtures. Once the artwork is dry, the whole egg is sealed inside and out. This allows the finished handcrafted emu egg to be cleaned with a damp cloth (if necessary) in future years.
Painted Eggs
Painted eggs are started by sealing a cleaned emu egg. Inspired by the rich texture, size, and colour of the emu egg itself, and the beautiful flora and fauna around me, creativity wells up in me and I just need to paint. It is always a delight to see how each painted egg will turn out as I work in the spur of the moment. The rich natural colour of the emu egg is always preserved somewhere in the design. Each egg becomes a one-of-a-kind artwork, created in harmony with the original features of the shell. These artworks are signed and come numbered with a unique authenticity code and matching gift tag.
Commissioned Eggs
Over the years I have completed a number of commissioned handcrafted emu eggs. Some of these are cut and handcrafted 3D designs while others are painted. When I receive a request, I ensure that I spend time with the client to get a feel for their individual desires and interests. This means that the final piece is specifically tailored to the person.
